Programme Structure and Specification

Study Mode

The Foundation Programme is a one-year academic programme spread over two semesters and offered on a full-time basis.

Students attend lectures, complete assignments, undergo periodical tests, and sit for end-of-semester examinations, similar to other pre-university pathways.

The total credit load of the Foundation Programme is 50 credit hours.

Assessment

Laboratory work: 100% course work

Courses: 50%–60% course work, 40%–50% final examination

Award requirement: Students must pass a total of 50 credit hours with a minimum CGPA of 2.00.

Entry Requirements

General Entry Requirements
  • Malaysian citizen
  • Pass Sejarah at SPM level
  • 5 credits including Bahasa Melayu at SPM level
Malaysian Applicants

Applicants must meet the stream-specific subject requirements based on the Foundation concentration selected.

  • Physical Science: 4 credits in relevant SPM/SPMV subjects, including Mathematics and science-related subjects.
  • Life Science: 4 credits in relevant SPM/SPMV subjects, including Mathematics and science-related subjects.
  • Social Science: 4 credits in relevant SPM/SPMV subjects including Mathematics, or equivalent recognised qualifications.
International Applicants
  • Meet UTM’s English language requirements.
  • Fulfil country-specific entry requirements approved by the University Senate.
  • Equivalent recognised qualifications may be considered based on the selected concentration.

Foundation Concentrations

Physical Science

Designed for students who wish to continue into engineering and science fields.

Suitable for progression into areas such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and related fields.

Life Science

Designed for students who wish to pursue studies in life sciences and natural sciences.

Suitable for progression into areas such as Industrial Biology, Biology, Chemistry, and other related science-based fields.

Social Science

Designed for students who wish to continue into social science-related degree pathways.

Suitable for progression into areas such as Human Resource, Psychology, Management, Education, Accountancy, and related fields.

Admission Requirements

General University Requirement

Pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or equivalent with a credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in History.


Group 1

Programmes: Diploma in Computer Science, Diploma in Land Surveying, Diploma in Quantity Surveying, Diploma in Accounting

Specific Requirement: 3 credits including Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, and 1 other subject; and pass in English.

  • Applicants for Diploma in Computer Science may be required to take Matematik Pengukuhan based on qualification background.
  • Applicants for Diploma in Land Surveying must not be colour blind and must not have physical disabilities that hinder practical work.

Group 2

Programmes: Diploma in Property Management, Diploma in Technology Management, Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning, Diploma in Architecture, Diploma in Sport and Fitness

Specific Requirement: 3 credits including Bahasa Melayu and 2 other subjects; and pass in English.

  • Applicants for Diploma in Architecture must pass an interview and drawing test.
  • Applicants for Diploma in Sport and Fitness must pass an interview and fitness test.

Group 3

Programme: Diploma in Islamic Studies Education

Specific Requirement: 5 credits in Bahasa Melayu and 4 other subjects.

  • Students who did not obtain at least a credit in Arabic Language, or did not take Arabic Language at SPM level, are required to take and pass the Pengukuhan Bahasa Arab course.

General University Requirement

Pass Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or equivalent with a credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in History.


Programmes: Diploma in Civil Engineering, Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Diploma in Electronic Engineering, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Diploma in Chemical Engineering

Specific Requirement: 3 credits in Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, and 1 Pure Science / Applied Science / Technical subject; and pass in English.

  • Applicants must not be colour blind and must not have physical disabilities that hinder practical work.
  • SPM holders who pass but do not obtain a credit in Mathematics may be required to take and pass the Matematik Pengukuhan course.
Other recognised entry pathways may also be accepted. Applicants with Polytechnic / SKK / SKM / SVM / O-Level / APEL A or other related qualifications should refer to the latest UTM SPACE diploma requirements for programme-specific eligibility.
