MyCoral CARE 8.0 Strengthens Coral Restoration and Community Engagement in Terengganu

The??at Management and Science University (MSU) successfully hosted the 8th edition of MyCoral CARE, an eco-marine project, from 18 to 20 July 2025, held across Kampung Mangkok and Pulau Geluk in Terengganu.

This is the second coral restoration endeavour of the year by IMS, after a successful?, in conjunction with the 15th edition of the MSU Education Tour, a joint effort with Pattimura University (UNPATTI).

A total of 106 participants joined the environmental outreach initiative, comprising 67 MSU students, two lecturers, five staff and alumni, 27 international participants, and five community divers. The international delegation represented Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Universitas Pattimura, North Sichuan Medical College, as well as Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta.

A key highlight of the programme was the launching of the MyCoral Community Learning Centre, officiated by Dean of IMS Professor Dr. Mohamad Khairuddin Abd Wahab.?

The newly launched MyCoral Community Learning Centre (CLC) at Kampung Mangkok stands as a community learning hub made possible through the collaboration between MSU, Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan Setiu, and the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM)–Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).?

The CLC is built with a full green technology concept, powered by solar energy, innovated by researchers from MSU’s??under the MySolar Project. As part of MSU’s knowledge transfer programmes, CLC was established to foster a stronger connection between MSU and the wider community; these programmes are designed to promote sustainable engagement by addressing pressing environmental and human capital challenges through collaborative solutions.

MSU received RM40,000 in funding from APPGM-SDG for the development of the Community Learning Centre. This funding was granted in recognition of the success of the MyCoral Community Diver Project conducted previously.

The launching also included the handover of the appointment certification for MyCoral Community Divers.

Among the invited guests were Abdul Kadir Yusuf, Economic Affairs Assistant Officer at the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM); Raja Aunani Raja Daud, General Manager of the Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan Setiu; and Izarenah Md. Repin, Fisheries Officer at the Department of Fisheries Malaysia.

The three-day programme also featured a series of impactful activities, including a workshop and free health screenings for the local community in Kampung Mangkok; coral awareness sessions in Kampung Mangkok; coral restoration and beach-cleaning activities at Pulak Geluk, held in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries (DOF) and Dorken Reef Resources; and mangrove restoration efforts in Kampung Mangkok.

MyCoral 8.0 was supported by the World Wide Fund (WWF) Malaysia, the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, Universitas Brawijaya, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, Universitas Pattimura, Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and Dorken Reef Resources.
