This field is about teaching and learning and its application to the education of people. The main purpose of this field of study is to develop educators who have an understanding of the philosophical and theoretical bases of education and its role in society, the factors which influence learning, teaching strategies and educational processes. This includes learning to plan, implement and evaluate appropriate curricula and learning programmes and assessing and reporting student achievement.
What you will learn
1. Education science
Under this sub-field, courses will prepare you in the theories, methods and techniques of teaching and learning, and the evaluation of the learning process. You will learn about pedagogy and study ways of improving the teaching process. This includes assessing and researching different teaching methods, determining the effectiveness of these methods, and finding better methods or strategies in teaching and learning.
2. Teacher training
The teacher training sub-field will teach you the philosophies and theories of education and its role in society. You will learn about the factors that influence learning, teaching strategies and educational processes; how to apply them when planning, implementing and evaluating curricula; and how to assess academic progress and achievement. You will be trained to produce and use a wide range of materials for teaching, learning and research in education.

Courses offered in this field include training that prepares you to teach students at early childhood, primary, secondary and special education levels. Teaching at secondary level may require you to specialise in one or more areas, for example, science, arts, language, music, physical education, teaching pedagogy and methodology, and many more. Courses are taught at diploma, bachelor’s degree and postgraduate levels. Bachelor degrees usually take 3 years to complete in Malaysia. Bachelor’s degree graduates in teacher education need to be certified by the Ministry of Education Malaysia to teach at schools. Bachelor of Education (TESL) with honours at Open University Malaysia prepares you with the knowledge from both the education and English language fields. The course is conducted via distance learning, and students are required to accumulate 120 credit hours in order to graduate.
The curriculum focuses on three main components:
- development of the foundations of education and pedagogical knowledge;
- enhancement of curriculum and pedagogical knowledge in TESL; and
- improvement of knowledge in English language and TESL.

- Passed a teaching certificate from teacher training college; OR
- Passed a polytechnic certificate; OR
- Other equivalent qualifications recognised by the government.

Flexible Entry
- Be at least 21 years old on 1st of January (application year); AND
- Passed at least PMR or equivalent; AND
- Passed Flexible Entry Assessment; AND
- Possess prior learning experience AND / OR knowledge relevant to the programme applied.
